"Article marketing" is one of the most venerable forms of web site traffic and link generation, and the most durable.  Unlike "fly by night" strategies that work briefly until the search engines catch on, marketing with articles is here to stay, and may be the single best way to get web site traffic.

The basic premise when you monetize a website with article marketing is that when you publish an article in a directory or ezine, you get immediate traffic to your site, as well as being able to post a "resource box" which describes your product or service and provides and all-important backlink to your site.

Those links are good as gold.  Think about what happens when you post even one article to a few major article directories.  You get half a dozen or more links just by doing that, and in addition, you get your articles (and your URL) announced on numerous RSS feeds operated by the article directory, often resulting in increased web site traffic for you.

Inevitably, a certain number of your articles get picked up for reprinting on other websites, or may be picked up for publication by various ezine editors, so be sure to insist that your resource box and links be kept intact.  Each time your article is reprinted on another website, it gives you another backlink, and those can add up fast.  While the search engines may to some extent "discount" links from articles directories, a reprint on another website is seen by the search engine as a "vote" for your site.
